They say that moving is one of the most stressful events in a person’s life, and if that’s the case, packing is definitely the most hectic and taxing component of that event. Most people spend days, even weeks, packing up their things and, even then, mistakes can be made, which may at best cause confusion, and at worst cause damage to expensive items. To help you avoid this, we have put together a few packing tips which many moving experts recommend for a successful transition.
Before you pack any of your belongings and seal them in cardboard boxes, you might want to first pack a separate suitcase for each person involved in the move. Pack just as if you were going on a 3 or 4 day vacation, with a few changes of clothes and personal hygiene products. This will save you the trouble of locating and rifling through a bunch of boxes every time you want to change clothes.
One of the first rules of packing is to slow down; it’s not a race. Experts point out that, to avoid confusion, packing should be completed one room at a time and that each box you fill should be clearly marked as to which room the it is destined for. In other words, if the home you’re moving into has two bathrooms, and the items you are packing are destined for bathroom #1, a sample marking may look something like this: BTHRM-1/6-or 1st bathroom, 6th box. This type of labeling can really streamline the “unpacking” process. Also, when stacking boxes in individual rooms, always keep the heavier boxes on the bottom to avoid possible damage, and save space by packing very light items such as towels and pillows around heavier, fragile items.
Packing electronic items can be a bit trickier. Take note of how each of these items are connected-whether it be a television, stereo or home theater system-and keep the cords for each item securely together. This will save you minutes, if not hours when reconnecting these products at your new location. For very fragile electronics, use plenty of packing peanuts and double-box for added protection.
By following these tips-clearly marking your boxes, discarding or donating old items and protecting fragile electronic equipment-you can ensure that the process of unpacking goes just as smoothly as the packing did.
